Most of us have heard about the tragic New Years Day slaying of Oscar Grant by BART cop Johannes Mehserle.
Mehserle and every other cop are going to shoot first and then do the paperwork. If citizens want a better chance at survival, they need to use ‘Yes, sir’ and ‘No, sir’ when talking to cops- regardless of the color of their skin.
There are black cops too. There are all kinds of colors of cops and that don’t mean shit. What does mean something is when people talk shit to cops, the chance of the person getting killed goes up. And whether this is right or wrong doesn’t really matter for the purpose of this argument, and here’s why: Because dead people don’t argue, and they don’t talk shit either. A dead person who was wrongfully killed can’t get up and say, ‘Man that was bullshit,’ because they’re dead.
The author is white and has had the knee to the back plenty of times for no reason, and is probably lucky to be alive. Maybe kissing ass can save your life. Maybe sometimes being white can too. But the point is to stay alive any way you can.
The time to exercise rights is not when a cop’s knee is already in the alleged perpetrator’s back and he (the citizen) is wasted and pissed off. Believe it, this is the time to kiss ass- if survival is one of the citizen’s goals.
Mehserle may or may not go down. The justice system has proven marginal at best as far as producing any justice. But whatever the outcome of what is sure to be a protracted and blurry procedure, this is for certain: cops all over the world are going to continue to shoot to kill. After all, dead cops can’t make any arrests.
Being a cop on the street can’t be a guessing game. A cop doesn’t have the luxury of guessing, ‘Oh maybe he’s a nice kid, maybe his gun is just for looks. Maybe he doesn’t have a gun at all.’ Bullshit. Protocol is safety and safety has to assume that the alleged perpetrator is ready to kill.
That’s why in this country right now, right or wrong (that’s another story), if one is considered a perpetrator (whether innocent or not), the protocol for the citizen is to lay the fuck down and start kissing ass. Because at this point it’s not about any rights, it’s only about your ass. The alleged perpetrator can pop off and start running mouth and maybe get killed, or shut the fuck up and maybe live.
These are the real choices the citizens have. The law, the court, the judge, your mama might all say different and that’s a topic that can go all night arguing. But when the shit goes down at the wrong place at the wrong time, the citizens need to know the real choices they have are life and death.
Cops don’t have time to play games in the field. Protocols are guidelines and people are live and unpredictable. No doubt the cops fucked up in the tragic New Years Day slaying. But an unarmed citizen in the street everyday has to know that cops are humans and they are going to fuck up too. That’s why citizens need to be extra careful around cops. Remember they are trained to kill and paid to do it. So watch the fuck out.
